NHL GOALTENDER

The Goaltender:

The NHL Goaltender in ice hockey is also called as the net minder or the goalie. He is the person responsible for defending the goal of his team, by stopping the puck shots from going into the net. This prevents the opponent team from gaining points. The goaltender normally plays in the area known as the goal crease, which is in front of the net. The goaltender has to wear very high quality safety equipment, as the speed of the puck shots is tremendously high. This prevents the direct impact of the pucks from the body. At any given time, during the match, only one goalie per team is allowed to operate on the ice.

Privileges of the Goalie:

The goaltender is at very specialized position in the game of ice hockey. The normal players do not play in the goaltenders position and vice versa. An ice hockey team usually has two to three goalies on its roster. The goaltender has the privilege of wearing special equipment that other players are not allowed to wear. The goalie is allowed to freeze the ball by holding it in his hands to stop the play. The opponent team is penalized, if any of their players indulges in hitting the goalie deliberately.

NHL Goaltending Awards:

The Vezina Trophy, The William M. Jennings Trophy and The Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award are some of the awards that are given to the goaltenders of the NHL. These awards are given to the goalies for excellence shown in the league games.
