The games of the National Hockey League are mainly played on the hockey rinks, which are rectangular in shape, containing corners rounded in shape and besieged by a wall. The length of the hockey rink is 60.92 metres and the width being 25.91 metres. Based on the international standards, the ideal length of a rink needs to be as much as 61 metres long and 30 metres wide. The center line of the hockey rink partitions the ice into half. It is mainly used for ascertaining violations with regards to icing. Two blue lines properly partition the rink into thirds. These blue lines partition the ice into the neutral zone and the attacking zone.
Miscellaneous:
At the end of both sides of the rink, a red goal line helps in the measuring the ice width. These are especially used in the calling of ice and the judging of goals. From the 2005-2006 seasons, subsequent to the thorough tests in the American Hockey League, the trapezoidal area in the back of each goal net was brought in. The goaltender only has to play the hockey puck on the backside of the goal line. It cannot be done in the area of the trapezoid.
Benches:
The areas outside the hockey rink comprises of five to seven benches. The two benches are reserved for the coaches and the players of the team. In addition, the two penalty benches are reserved for the penalized players. The remaining bench/benches is/are for the other off-ice officials.
