The NHL hockey teams originated with the formation of the national hockey league in the year 1917. Initially, there were only four teams in the national hockey league. After this, the league had to undergo through a number of changes. It had a number of team expansions, relocations of the teams and also reductions. Currently, the national hockey league consists of thirty teams. Out of these, twenty four are stationed in the United States of America and six teams are based in Canada.
Franchise:
The Montréal Canadians are the franchise of the national hockey leagues that are most successful, having obtained 24 Stanley cup championships. In the overall leagues of different games, the Montréal Canadians are only surpassed by the major league baseball team of the New York Yankees. The other successful franchise of the national hockey league is Toronto maple leaf. They have received in all 13 Stanley cup championships. Then, there are the Detroit red wings with ten Stanley cup championships. It is the most successful franchise of the league that is based in the United States. The Montréal Canadians hold the record of receiving the Stanley cup on five consecutive occasions, from the year 1955-56 to 1959-60.
Conferences:
The teams are divided into two conferences by the organization of the current league of the national hockey league. Each of the conferences has in all three different divisions and each of the divisions has a total of five teams. The conferences are the eastern conference and the western conference.
