Thanks to the series of altercations in the Canadian National Hockey Association in between the owners of the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, the Quebec Bulldogs and the Montreal Wanderers and the owner of the Toronto Blue Shirts. This resulted in the discussion about the future of the National Hockey Association. These discussions led to the formation of the National Hockey League, in the year 1917. The Senators, the Wanderers and the Canadiens were the founding teams. The franchise of Toronto was temporarily handed over to the Toronto Arena Corporation for operational purposes. They are often called as the “arenas”.
Expansion and Sustenance of NHL:
Although, it was difficult for the league to remain in the business for the first ten years, the teams from the National hockey League used to excel in ice. It was only once in the year 1925, that a team other than the National hockey league won the Stanley Cup. By the year 1926, National Hockey League was the only league which was vying for the cup. Subsequently, an expansion process was initiated by the National Hockey League. The Montreal Maroons and the Boston Bruins joined the league in the year 1924 – 1925. In the 1925 – 1926 seasons, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Americans entered the Hockey league. This was followed by the addition of Chicago Black Hawks and the New York Rangers during the 1926 season.
Miscellaneous:
By 1927, the number of teams in the National Hockey League went up to 10. The league was heavily affected by the outcome of the Great Depression.
