The NHL Presidents trophy is a recognition award given to the team that has finished the season with the maximum number of points, by the national hockey league. The trophy was presented at the beginning of the national hockey league season of 1985-86. The trophy was the brain child of the board of governors of the national hockey league. The winning team of the season is also presented with 350,000 Canadian dollars as prize money. This money is shared between the team players.
The Original Six Era:
In the era of the original six teams of the national hockey league, the criteria of awarding the presidents trophy was used for the awarding of the price of Wales trophy. Separate trophies were awarded to the top finishers in the league, who belonged to different divisions. A cash bonus was also given to each of the players from the regular topping teams of the league. In addition to these awards, the Presidents Trophy was presented from the season of 1985-86.
