The NHL season structure is divided into two forms. The first form is the regular season and the other is the playoffs. The regular season starts from the foremost Wednesday, in the month of October and ends in the beginning of the month of April, in the next year. The next category of the seasons of the national hockey league is the playoff. It starts from April, after the regular season and ends in June.
The Regular Season:
In this season, the teams of the national hockey league play against each other, in a schedule that is predefined. Each team has to play 82 games. 41 games are played at home and 41 are played on the road. Points are given for each of the game. Two points are given for the winning team and one is given for losing in the overtime of shootout stage. A regulation loss is given zero points. Towards the end of the season, the team having the maximum points in each of the divisions is awarded the division championship, while the overall leader in the league is awarded the presidents trophy.
Playoffs:
The playoff is an elimination tournament, wherein two teams play against each other in a best of seven series. The first round has the team seeded first playing the eight seeded team, the 2nd against the seventh, 3rd with the 6th and the fourth with the fifth. In the next round, the NHL re-seeds the playing teams. In the last round of the playoffs, the champions of the tournament receive the Stanley cup.
