The Championship Cup:

The NHL Stanley cup is the cup awarded to the champions of the National Hockey League. It is most commonly referred as “The Cup” or the “Holy Grail”. It is also called “Lord Stanley’s Mug”. The Stanley cup is very peculiar in nature, because it is only awarded when the winners of the previous season repeat their feat in the current season. The trophy also has the distinction of being the only trophy of professional sports, which engraves the names of the winning team members on it.

History of the Cup:

The Stanley cup is one of the oldest cups that is competed for, by the players in the professional leagues of North America. The Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston had donated the trophy to a top most club in Canada, featuring ice hockey. In the year 1915, an agreement was signed between the national hockey association and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association for facing each other in anticipation of the Stanley cup. The cup became the sole property of the National Hockey League, in the year 1926.

The Stanley Cup Today:

There are in all three cups that are present. The original bowl that Lord Stanley bought is at present displayed in Toronto, Ontario in the hockey hall of fame. The second version is the presentation cup that was created by Mr. Carl Petersen in the year 1963. It is given to the champions of the season of playoffs. The third form of the cup is used as a stand in cup.
